Numero uno on the list? Phil's BBQ. Over 2,400 reviews on Yelp, and STILL 4.5 stars? Long wait times with signs posted like at amusement park rides, "Wait time from this point, approximately 20 minutes"? I was willing to suffer in line, in the blistering 75 degree heat (haha), for amazing BBQ. Do I need to mention that I love BBQ???
It's too bad that there aren't many great BBQ joints in West LA. And after getting semi-food poisoning (Yes, there is such a thing!) once too many times at Baby Blue's BBQ in Venice after indulging in their Texas style beef rib, I was on the hunt for better BBQ...and unfortunately found out that awesome BBQ is found nearly 3 hours away in San Diego. Sigh. Can they please open one up in LA?? I'd be there at least once a week, if not more!
One is found in North County San Diego in the suburbs of San Marcos. It's new, clean, less crowded, and close to the Safari Park so that it's a perfect place to indulge your inner carnivore after a day of staring at those tasty animals at the Safari Park. I kid, I kid! The second is found in Downtown San Diego near the ballpark. Yes, I went to both in a period of 4 days and scarfed on beef ribs...and no, I'm not ashamed.
So what you do is get in line, check out the huge menu of BBQ meats, order and pay at the counter, get a buzzer, find a seat, go buy a beer at the beer counter, pick up your order, tuck a napkin into your shirt and grab a rib with your bare hands (refined caveman style) and start chowing down. I opted for the steak knife and fork method, which is a less fun way to eat ribs, but more splatter proof.
I suggest ordering the awesomely AWESOME awesome (did I already say awesome?) Beefy Ribs! Oh, man...on my first visit, I made the mistake of ordering the 5-rib platter not knowing how enormous they were (each rib is about 6" long). I was in rib heaven and ate all of the ribs even though I was full by rib #3. Hey, I may be a woman, but I can still pack it down like the guys out there!
Ready to drool? Behold!
